book/poster design, book binding, type design & photography

look what i found —

Four posters and a book which show a process of using photographs of found letterforms to direct the invention of new letterforms. The poster series highlights stages of the design process and the book provides more detail with expressive spreads of the letters in-use.

project details —

Sometimes things that aren’t letters look like letters. I decided to use this idea to inform a process which invents letterform designs. I documented found letterforms with photographs, traced them with a vector drawing, performed a series of manipulations to the drawing, and this resulted in new/invented letterforms.

In this process, I would alter the original vector drawing bit by bit, leaving a trail of iterations. When I got to a form that looked new but still had a trace of the original photographed form I stopped. The posters depict select stages of the process and the book shows six variations of the manipulation process to give the reader a visual progression of shifting one form to another. There are also expressive spreads in the book which use the invented letterforms.

The book itself is a handmade. The hardcover opens flat, the text block is only mounted on the back which leaves exposed sewing up the spine.
